DV Flash Report Week 12

Novelty

  • It is the time of year for Cut Hyacinth and we have them in white, pink, blue and purple. Sun Valley has published a new care and handling document. You can view this document on Eye On DVFlora by <clicking here>.
  • Open Cut Ranunculus is back from Mellano.  It’s very limited right now and only available in mixed bunches. Look for solid colors to be available in the next couple of weeks.
  • We are seeing good production from the stock growers in California. Prices remain low and will continue for at least another week. Expect prices to rise as we approach Easter.
  • Production of larkspur is slowly increasing and the prices have come down as well. We are finally seeing some white trickle in. You will all be glad to hear that there will be white in the mixed boxes again next week.
  • The Delphinium Market remains tight with demand on the rise. There were limited amounts of Bella Donna light blue and dark blue available. Production is very low and farms struggle to fill standing orders. This will continue into April when production is expected to improve.
  • Hybrid Delphinium is virtually non-existent. We were able to find more Blue River Hybrid than in the past weeks. What ever we are able to purchase sells out very early.
  • Production on Snapdragons from California has increased and the prices continue to come down. Production of colored snaps from Canada is low and the price has gone back up. White snaps will be priced lower as production still remains high out of Canada.
  • There is a gap in production of sunflowers from California. You will see limited amounts of California Sunflowers for a week or two.
  • The Hydrangea market remains steady, with a good supply available from South America in white, blue and greens.  Pinks, hot pinks, dark blue and purple are limited from South America. New Zealand hydrangea is also limited in pinks and purples.
  • There continues to be very limited California Laceflower production for next week.  We would expect the crop to come back on nicely, by 3/29.
  • Lily prices continue on the lower side with some great deals on assorted boxes available.

 Basics & Greens

  • Sago Palm is expensive at this time, especially the taller stuff. We currently do not have any tall available.  If you need something specific, please let your Sales Associate know. It will cost around $17-$20 per 5 stem bunch of 4-5′ Sago. Our grower doesn’t have any available this week, but might be able to cut a few larger size. We do have the 2-3′ size available.
  • Date Palm.  We have Phoenix Roebellini available; it’s a Date Palm. There is taller available, but we currently are stocking the 2-3′ size.
  • We also have Palm Fans in Small and Large.
  • We are starting to notice both Carnation and Mini Carnation product is lower than normal. This ususally means an increase in pricing will follow.
  • Pom Pon availability and pricing are at good levels right now. This may start to change as we get closer to Easter.

 Filler

  • We are coming to the end of Ginestra out of California. We will continue to carry it from Italy.
  • The growers are transitioning from one variety of Heather to another so supply is limited and the price has increased. The variety that we will be seeing now is called Persoluta.
  • There is good production of Waxflower in particular the hybrid varieties and purple pride. Production on the regular pink and white remain very low, as these are some of the older varieties and growers have turned to the more popular Hybrids.
  • Aster (Monte & Solidago) production has become lower then expected. The Dominican Republic has much lower than normal temperatures at the moment, and their production has decrease drastically. Ecuador is also seeing reduced production. We would expect pricing to rise as supply becomes more limited.

 Roses

Today’s market is much different than last week. There is very little product in the market. Even generic type product like Asst 40cm roses cost wholesalers double what they did two weeks ago. Not only has production dropped off, but also demand has picked up pretty dramatic these past 7-10 days. We are not sure how long the market will remain this way but right now price are very high and there is minimal product in the market.

Our Product managers attended a show in Miami Florida this past week for all Miami importers. The common theme at the show was how crazy the market is and how nobody has roses available (farms and importers). Every year at this time the market tightens up a little, but we don’t ever remember it being this scarce.

  • Red rose are priced very high with very little in the market. Some importers have actually priced them higher than at Christmas time.
  • Colors rose in both solid and assorted colors are priced high with little available.
  • This week’s “Rose of the Week” is Hot Pink Topaz. This is a real dark hot pink, really a beautiful color. Check it out!
  • For next week we where able to get some really great prices from Elite Farms, that we are promoting on this week’s Distinctive Values mailer.

 Botanical & Tropical

  • It looks like Oxalis is done for the season. All the growers in Canada are sold out already.
  • By Wednesday 3/17 we should have most all varieties of potted bulb plants in stock.
  • Don’t forget to prebook you Easter Dish Gardens. First cutoff is Tuesday 3/16, check with your Sales Associate or check them out on https://www.dvflora.com
  • We are introducing a new Pincushion Protea called Spires see the picture below. This picture makes the Spires look pink.  I believe you will find it to be more towards a peach.

Look for…

  • You still have until Tuesday 3/16 to take advantage of some of the great offerings in this year’s Spring Edition Cream of the Crop 2010, seasonal standing orders.
  • Spring Silk Flyer to be inserted into our Distinctive Values on March 16th
