Fall Into Texture

By September 10, 2015No Comments

Leaves are changing, temperatures are getting cooler, and the smell of pumpkin spice is thick in the air…this can mean only one thing, the fall is coming! It’s time for us to take some time out to appreciate some of the rich fall textures available to you through DVFlora. With an abundance of local and imported product beginning to flood the market it is easy to lose your head, that’s why I’m here to steer you in the right direction! I have compiled a list, just for you, of my favorite textures to use in fall inspired arrangements to help give your customers the structure and depth they crave this time of year.

  • Broomcorn is like a pop of happiness in any arrangement, it is available in blonde as well as red and its elongated plume adds drama and rhythm to any design. They have kernel like seeds that adorn their elongated bristle like plumes that emerge from a bed of medium green grass blades. Their richness in texture is what is so alluring to the eye; they beckon you to take a closer look and acknowledge their unique spirit.

  • Amaranthus is a beloved textural element year round, but there are so many more varieties available in the fall other than your basic red and green hanging. Amaranthus is available in upright and hanging as well as an array of interesting colors to suit any taste; there are your traditional fall accent colors like red, copper, and champagne but my favorites are the amaranthus that add a pop of color like the green, plum, and variegated jester. These beauties allow you to play with color in a subtle way while adding a powerful textural element that evokes a rustic sense of fall celebration.

  • Celosia specifically coxcomb celosia is a bloom that stands out in my mind as my favorite fall flower to use. Their rich velvety texture accents a design beautifully and their vibrant range of color enhances their beauty and versatility, in addition their unique architecture compliments fall inspired florals perfectly. Whether you want them to blend into the arrangement or you want them to pop and stand out, celosia’s color variations will provide you with the perfect fall accent.

  • Blue thistle is the perfect accent color for the fall. When you have nothing but warm colors in a design a cool shade of blue is just the ticket to help make the colors pop and your design shine. Blue thistle’s spiky architecture adds depth and interest to a design, and with their tough texture, they play off of the softer petals of the flowers that surround them to help them stand out and say hello. Thistles are sturdy little numbers that can go the distance and hold up through a variety of precarious situations like heat and long periods of time in foam. So why not say hello to an old friend and welcome them into your new fall lineup?

  • Safflower is widely used this time of year in such an array of applications and all it takes is one look to understand why it is so beloved this time of the year. From its whimsical, orange, bristle like blooms that emerge from its robust, leathery, green bud; safflower is a charming beacon of inspiration this time of year. I love these uniquely brilliant buds because they’re more like a spray so you get more than 1 flower per stem, and when making fall centerpieces that is a huge help.

So the next time you hear the fall calling your name keep in mind texture is everywhere in the fall, and translating that into a design is all part of the fun.
