Orchids are a tropical symbol of luxury and status the world over, people associate them with high end design and elevated style; but as growing techniques have improved over the years, the price of orchids has come down which makes them accessible to more and more designers. As a designer I love nothing more than an elegant spray of delicate orchids to accent my wedding and event designs; but what really gets me going, is being able to incorporate my favorite flower of all time into everyday orders that way people at home can admire their stunning beauty and character too. From orchid plants to cut orchid specimens, DVFlora carries a wide selection of cut orchids to fit every budget and design style. I have compiled a guide for you to get to know our orchid varieties and their various applications to help you decide which orchid would best fit you and your design needs.

  • Phalaenopsis orchids are one of the most iconic blooms in the orchid family, from their wide butterfly like appearance to their delicate almost iridescent petals, there is no mistaking one of these beauties. Available in an array of vibrant colors, these showstoppers are most commonly seen in white, purple, and lavender they also come in a mini size as well standard too. Phaleanopsis are great because their large faced blooms that can be utilized in various ways, from wiring individual heads to add an accent to a bouquet to just utilizing the whole spray to create a dramatic flow, there are so many ways to showcase these stunning orchids. I love the look of a long graceful spray arching out of a large altarpiece or creating drama in a grand centerpiece, I also love using just one stem in a budvase with just a few fern leaves to create a clean backdrop to their pretty faces.

  • Vanda orchids have recently become very popular in the past few years and for good reason too! Vanda orchids have a medium sized face but they pack a multitude of character into that bloom, they are traditionally a light purple petal with a darker purple cross hatched design on them that create a blue appearance when layered together. Blue vandas are the perfect way to tie in a bluish hue to a fall wedding, they add just enough of color to accent a design while their unique architecture sets them apart from any other bloom they come across. I mainly use vandas in wedding work, even though they come on a stem in spray formation, I usually wind up picking the individual blooms into the bouquet rather than utilizing the spray as a whole, even though I know it is extra work I feel like the presentation is far superior.

  • Cymbidium are by far my favorite member of the orchid family; they are robust hardy blooms that never cease to amaze me. Their bloom stalks are packed full of waxy flowers that seem to last forever, cymbidiums usually last at least a week but they have been known to last more than a few weeks when properly tended to. Cymbidiums have such a broad spectrum of color variations and I often feel like that is another reason they are so popular, vivid pinks, green, red, orange, brown, white, and yellow are just the tip of the iceberg when you talk about cymbidium colors. As if their color pallets weren’t enough, cymbidiums are available in mini and standard sizes which means there is a cymbidium for any price range. I love how many ways cymbidiums can be applies to designs, I have submerged them in tall vases, and left them long to add a dramatic cascade to a design, I’ve even just used individual heads in water tubes attached to a pick to give an elevated tropical vibe to a design.

  • Dendrobium orchids are the most popular orchid on the market right now, their low price and small size make them not only affordable but also easy to incorporate into everyday work. Dendrobium orchids are just like a cascade of happiness, their delicate blooms stretch up the stem in a gradient from most open to tight buds, I love how looking at just one stem can show you all the bloom stages of these magnificent flowers. Dendrobiums are also a master of color variation; they are available in white, green, purple, variegated, blush, and pink; if you are looking for something a little bit more nontraditional you can also get them in dyed blue too. Dendrobiums are so easy to incorporate into a design, I like to use them in vase arrangements as an asymmetrical accent; also around prom season I love to use dendrobiums for corsages and boutonnieres they hold up extremely well and clients think they are getting a high end upgrade.
