Part 3 of our 4 part series introducing new Ecuadorian rose farms features Agrinag Roses and shifts the focus about 50 miles south of Quito, the Cotopaxi province. This region is particularly interesting because it is home to the Cotopaxi Volcano, which is an active volcano in the Andes Mountains.
One of the advantages for growing roses here is the altitude, which is 3,000m above sea level. This provides for stronger sunlight and longer days, helping the stems grow beautifully with vibrant blooms. Another is the rich volcanic soil that is filled with minerals and is known for being fertile.
Agrinag was founded in 2003 and currently has 42 hectares where they produce 100 varieties of roses, some spray roses, alstroemeria and a very nice selection of tinted roses. For years they have introduced new, exciting and unique rose varieties to the market, including Sensei, Coldplay and Felicity. They continue to be one of the worldwide leaders in innovating rose production.
They have also increased efforts in social responsibility and in expanding their eco-friendly practices. That includes being certified by The Rainforest Alliance, Flor Ecuador, BASC, SEDEX.
It is important to mention, in 2008 Agrinag founded the Deer of Cotopaxi Rescue Center, since then Hundreds of animals from many species including hawks, monkeys, and tropical birds, have all lived at their rescue center and they are proud to say that 18 of them have been successfully returned to their natural habitat.
