Roses
Production is very poor and demand is through the roof. We don’t see much relief coming anytime soon.
Standard Roses – specific varieties are impossible to get. We are experiencing shortages with every shipment. We will have good quantities and selections of all colors and shades but no variety is a guarantee. Prices this week and next week are well over Mother’s Day pricing. That will not change through next week and we expect for the following two weeks, prices will remain high. Prices on Red Roses are up a little but still reasonable.
Garden roses– up through now, we’ve done pretty well. We have a good inventory but similar to standard roses, specific varieties will be tough to secure.
Spray roses– This is the toughest of all flowers this time of year. NO variety is a guarantee here. We have a healthy inventory for next week but will have shortages on even the most common varieties (Majolicas, Ilse, etc…). We have lots of pinks and whites so please try to be flexible and work with the varieties we have available. We have been filling in with Sprays from Holland but the prices are extremely high.
Basics
Carnations and Mini Carnations– These continue to be tight in the market. In fact, availability seems to be getting slightly worse for next week. According to most farms, production levels are 20 – 30% lower than in 2015. We expect availability to be tight for another few weeks with pricing remaining high. Also, now is when growers typically begin to revise their plantings- they remove older plants from beds and new plantings are delayed until Fall, to begin to yield production November thru Spring of the following year. This revision usually lowers production during the summer months when demand is low. We’re not hearing about any revision plans from farms as of yet, but if they begin to revise as normal, the production shortage of Carns could go on for quite some time.
Gyp– The weather in Ecuador is holding back production and farms have definitely begun their revision plans, pulling some plants out of the production cycle. Availability of Gyp will remain tight for the next few weeks.
Lilies– It looks as though both California and Costa Rican production is now back on. But production of 2-Bloom lilies is still very limited since most growers are aiming for 3+ bloom production by buying better bulbs.
Mums/Pom Pons- We have fairly good availability for next week on most Poms and Mums. As we start the summer months Pom/Mum farms will cut production levels back as always due to lower levels of demand. This means that pricing will remain close to where we currently are.
Novelties/Tropicals
Cymbidiums– Dutch Mini Cymbidium are just about finished. We will have some for next week and then we will switch to New Zealand. In the next week or 2 we will also be transitioning to the New Zealand for full size Cymbidium. Be aware that pricing is higher for New Zealand and we don’t get to pick specific varieties, just general colors- Pink, Dark Pink, White, etc.
Dendrobium– This is the time of year when the whites start to become harder to get and quality may become questionable. Yellow buds are typical this time of year but our suppliers will do their best to send us the best quality product.
Hypericum- Peach is very limited at this time. This will last another week or two. Farms cut hard for Mother’s Day and are waiting to recover.
Peony– We have a nice selection of Peony for this week from Holland and some Locals too.
Stock– The supply really improved this week with the exception of white. However the prices remain high.
Larkspur– Availability is winding down and we may start to see some shortages. We will start to see the larkspur coming in a little shorter from the Baja region as we get deeper into the season.
Delphinium– There is a good supply of delph, but demand is very high. It is possible that we will see some shortages.
Snapdragons– Production in California has stalled and we will see shortages in colors for the next 10 to 14 days. There seems to be a good supply of white and pink at least. Canadian production of tall snaps has increased, and prices are back to normal. Medium snaps are very limited and will remain so for next week.
Ranunculus and Anemone– The ranunculus and anemone season is coming to an end. There are very limited sources left to draw from and their production is limited to say the least. There may still be a few colors available on Dutch Direct but prices will be high. Both of these products are a cold weather crops. As it warms up production decreases and we are faced with numerous quality issues during shipping. It is advisable to look for alternatives until the season ramps up again in the fall.
Seeded Euc– Regular Seeded Euc is coming back but production is still very limited so prices remain high. Availability and price will get better in the next few weeks.
