Tulips have always been a versatile product that is used in many applications.

From cash and carry markets, to vase arrangements, to specialty use in wedding and event work, to festivals and field events – the tulip remains a popular product! The tulip is a staple of spring and the consumer demand begins in January and typically goes through May. Of course, there are year-round projects too, but the natural season is thought to be of Spring.

It all starts with the bulb...

This year’s Dutch tulip bulb harvest was not a great one. Due to wet weather events, between 20% and 40% of the Dutch bulb harvest was lost. Many of these bulbs rotted in the fields. The percentage that is of good quality came in at an average bulb size that is smaller than usual. These very bulbs that were in the ground from last Winter and into early Summer were being grown for the upcoming 2025 tulip season. As a result of the lower harvest and factoring in supply and demand; we are expecting higher prices for 2025.

The impact of this bulb shortage is impacting every tulip grower in the Northern Hemisphere. At DVFlora, we utilize several growers and several growing regions that allow us to meet various price points, packaging sizes, and quality/variety needs of our Customers.

Standing Orders will be even more valuable
than they have been in the past

Last year, prices were down on fixed price standing orders; yet the open market prices were above those levels all season. With the basic principles of supply and demand; this scenario will be duplicated and magnified at a level higher for the upcoming season.

As always, you can rely on DVFlora’s farm direct sourcing to assure the best value tulips that you can find in the market. While many of our tulips are grown in Holland we also have one very special source in our Virginia grown tulips. The quality and freshness are unparalled as the Virginia product is being grown only 4 hours south of our headquarters. This product does not have to undergo the rigors of air freight and import complications. If you haven’t tried them yet, this would be a good year to try!
